Konza Prairie Trail Map

Located in eastern Kansas, the Konza Prairie Natural Area is a beautiful section of preserved tallgrass. Most of the area is used for research and closed to the public, but there is a network of trails open for hiking and exploring the prairie. The Konza map is intended to be a guide to help one better appreciate these trails and the general landscapes of the Prairie.

Recreational maps are nothing new, but this is certainly a different kind of map. One of the first things you'll notice is the sheer beauty of this map. The Konza map combines three types of data into a single map -- aerial photo imagery, contour lines from a topographic map, and digital elevation data for shaded relief. The result is a truly amazing map that gets the job done and looks good, too.

How was this map created? Find out, step by step, on the Making a Map page.

Current size of the Konza map is 17 by 11 inches. If you'd like a copy, e-mail info@topoimagery.com. This map has the following features:

  • Contour lines in 5-meter intervals
  • Prairie boundaries shown, major roads marked
  • Every segment in the public trail network is shown (12 km / 7 miles total)
  • Based on aerial photos, resulting in near-photorealism
  • Shaded relief derived from USGS Digital Elevation Model data
  • A perspective view from the south, emphasizing topography
  • 1km x 1km UTM grid shown for GPS navigation
  • Shows prairie, forest cover, fields, roads, and ponds

Puzzled about using the UTM grid with your GPS unit? See this intro to UTM, from MapTools.
