Shout Outs from my blogging Peeps

Cooking with Peeps has been making the blog rounds this Easter. First Laura Rebecca's Kitchen gave the Peeps on the Lawn Dessert Salad a try, and she took pictures! It looks like she's a real chef, so you might want to use her recipe instead of mine. Sophzilla calls my site disturbingly funny. I also got a mention on Slashfood and Metafilter, where someone commented "Bake, fry, grill harmless innocent marshmallow peeps? How could you, you monster?" Thanks, everyone, glad you enjoyed the page!

Take Your Peeps to Work Day

Today is Take Your Peeps to Work Day! What? You missed it? Well, stock up on leftover Peeps and try again next year. (note: sorry for the big pause in posting before Easter, but thanks to all of you who have checked this blog out!)

Peeped Their Ride

Believe it or not, this was not my idea. I was in a wedding in a nice Plains state on April 15, the day before Easter. The best man and I were looking at K-Mart to find something to decorate the getaway car with. Incredibly, the K-Mart was going out of business and had Peeps for 39 cents a box! I picked up a case of yellow chicks for personal use, and then the best man suggested we decorate the getaway car with my Peeps! That's all the encouragement I needed, so we recruited a few guests to help us out, including a girl who we got to write Welcome to the Peep Show on the back. Our time was limited, so we didn't go too crazy, but it was lots of fun. No word yet on how much of the honeymoon was spent scrubbing marshmallow goo off the Jeep..

Explosive Peeps Revisited

I found the secret to explosive Peeps!

Ever since an earlier blog entry, I have been puzzling over the question of how to make explosive Peeps. Finally, it came to me, and it's so simple! All we need is pressure, and that can be supplied by the plastic wrapping that encases our Peeps. So pop your unopened pack of Peeps into the microwave and let 'er rip!

After a few moments, the Peeps inside begin to swell. Then the box loses its shape and the Peeps rapidly expand and push the shrink wrap to unimaginable proportions. Finally, with a satisfying POP!, Peep guts fly and it's all over.

Effects on your microwave depend on how the plastic fails and the Peeps splatter, and may range from salvageable to potential Superfund site. Click on the image below to see a larger image of the aftermath. Warning: Not for the squeamish.

Red Peeps

Have you seen all the colors of Peeps this season yet? Are you sure? Swing by your local Target store and you'll see that, in addition to all the normal colors, they have packages of "Exclusively at Target" red Peeps!

Now, I enjoy Peeps, I really do, but somehow these almost look a little.. evil. What do you think?

Peep My Ride

What a strange sight today.. I'll refer to it as the PeepGirl Incident. On a Sunday afternoon drive, I happen upon a car which has four yellow objects stuck to the rear-view mirror and a fifth on the roof. Upon further inspection, they turn out to be Peeps! The girl driving the car seemed to be acting normally. Is this a prank played on someone, or has Peeping your Ride suddenly become hip?

Pi & Peeps Party

Peeps party! To celebrate the return of Peeps Chicks and Bunnies to store shelves everywhere, last night my roommate and I staged a "Pi and Peeps" party. We watched the incredibly bizarre film Pi and served PeepSmoothies. They were a hit. Check out the recipe on the Salads and Sides page, and have your own Peeps Party!

Peeps Season

Wow, Easter Peeps season already? You better believe it! I went to a few local evil "big" stores and grocery stores yesterday to look for half-off Valentine's Peeps. I did find some great bargains on Peeps Hearts, but also found that Easter stuff was out already! So rejoice, Peeps lovers everywhere. You have two full shopping months to enjoy Peeps before Easter arrives.

Explosive Peeps

A reader writes, "Can peeps be popped like popcorn? Thus making peepcorn?"

Given their amazing expansion after a few seconds in the microwave, one might conclude that Peeps will explode if microwaved long enough. However, this experimenter has done some trials and found that Peeps do not explode so readily. When left in the microwave, Peeps expand quickly, then begin to deflate a bit, and then the bottoms caramelize and eventually burn.

It should be possible to make Peepcorn. Stock Peeps do not detonate because there is no pressure buildup. Any moisture inside the Peeps is allowed to safely escape when heated. To make Peepcorn, you would need a hard outer shell like popcorn has in order to trap the expanding gases and force an explosion. If anyone has ideas or gets this to work, let me know!

November 1

Of course, it's the best candy shopping day of the year (marked down Halloween candy). So I swung by the local Albertson's to see what they had going. They didn't have much variety for Peeps, but that's OK. There was a large box of 24 cartons of Peeps Pumpkins, marked half off. Of course I picked it up. Let's see, at 24 pumpkins per carton and 24 cartons, that's over 500 Peeps. Yeah, should last me until Easter. Or at least Christmas, when the next varieties of Peeps come out.

When my roommate came home after this episode and saw the case of Peeps in the living room, there were renewed calls by him for me to look into Peeps Anonymous.
